It's Opening Day, the evening of April 26, 1995, and Rockies right-hander Bill Swift has just uncorked the first official pitch at Denver's brand new Coors Field. A bundled-up crowd of 47,228 will watch Mets leadoff batter Brett Butler slap the fastball deep into the hole at short and reach safely on the infield hit. The Rockies will escape the inning unscathed and go on to score two runs in their first at bat.
It's Friday afternoon, April 9, 1993, and the long-awaited moment is finally here: the first pitch of the first home game of the expansion Colorado Rockies! An Opening Day-record crowd of 80,227 is on hand at Mile High Stadium in Denver to witness Bryn Smith's pitch to Montreal Expos leadoff hitter Mike Lansing.
